Historic Center of Saint Petersburg and Related Groups of Monuments

St. Petersburg, or the ‘Venice of the North’, is respite with numerous canals and more than 400 bridges and is the result of a large urban project that started in 1703 under Peter the Great. St. Petersburg, later known as Leningrad, became the city closely associated with the October Revolution. Its cultural and architectural heritage is evident in the very different Baroque and neoclassical styles, as can be seen in the Admiralty, the Winter Palace, the Marble Palace and the Hermitage. Although not directly on the Svir River, St. Petersburg is typically either the embarkation or disembarkation point for Russia river cruisers.

Kizhi Pogost

The pogost, or small settlement, of Kizhi is located on Kizhi Island, one of the many islands in Lake Onega, in Karelia, Russia. Two unique 18th century wooden churches, the largest being the Church of the Transfiguration, are prominent on the horizon as your Russia river cruise ship nears port. Also look for the octagonal clock tower, also in wood and built in 1862, as well as other architectural masterpieces of the period and region. This rural river cruise port is a very special destination on your journey through Russia.
