Barranquilla

Colombia

Barranquilla is Colombia’s largest city on the Caribbean Sea and is known for being a busy active port city as well as a center of cultural diversity in Colombia.  It is home to the famous Colombia Carnival.  It has a long history of growth to be the fourth largest city in Colombia.  It’s Spanish colonial influence is clear as it was the key port for Spanish explorers and conquistadors to reach inland Colombia and beyond using the 1000 mile long Magdalena River.

Nueva Venecia

Nueva Venecia in Colombia is the ‘New Venice’ of South American with the town almost fully surrounded by the Grande Cienega Marshlands. It is not a town with roads as you will see that the residents prefer boat and long canoe for their daily transportation.  It is an excellent destination for birding enthusiasts as well as those fascinated by a culture that seems to enjoy being from a period long ago.

Mompox

Colombia

Mompox or Mompós, officially Santa Cruz de Mompox, is a town in northern Colombia, in the Bolívar Region. The town initially grew from its proximity to the Magdalena river and has preserved much of its historic Spanish colonial character. It also played an important role in the liberation of South America from Spain. Today, Mompox depends upon tourism, fishing, and some commerce generated by the local cattle raising. The town has a population of around 45,000. The historic center of Mompox was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995, owing to its preserved colonial architecture and mixture of architectural styles.

Magangue

The name Magangué comes from an indigenous Colombian tribe chief – the Zenú tribe – called Maguey, that lived on the lands of the city more than 500 years ago. The city of Magangue lies on the banks of the Magdalena River and also enjoys the waters of two other important rivers that are the life-blood of the community – The Cauca and San Jorge Rivers. Every October 28 Magangue celebrates as a community their ancient heritage with a large festival of art and dance.

Calamar

Colombia

Calamar is a town and municipality located in the Bolívar Department, northern Colombia. The town is situated on the Magdalena River at the entrance of the Canal del Dique.  Calamar was founded in the republican period, under the government of the general Tomás Cipriano de Mosquera . The first inhabitants arrived in the year 1840, settled in the site that today is called Calamar.

Cartagena is a port city on Colombia’s Caribbean coast. By the sea is the walled Old Town, founded in the 16th century, with squares, cobblestone streets and colorful colonial buildings. With a tropical climate, the city is also a popular beach destination. Reachable by boat are Isla de Barú, with white-sand beaches and palm trees, and the Islas del Rosario, known for their coral reefs.  Cartegena is a unique blend of historic and modern day port city – a cross of cultures almost.
