Bordeaux, Port of The Moon

The city of Bordeaux, often called the Port of the Moon, lies in south-west France near the confluence of the Garonne and Dordogne Rivers. This historic city was developed during the age of the Enlightenment. Bordeaux is known for its historic role as a center of trade and of cultural values for more than 2,000 years. The city renaissance of the early 18th century makes Bordeaux an outstanding example of innovative classical and neoclassical traditions and lends to an exceptional architectural unity and coherence even beyond its historic city center. Bordeaux’s location on the banks of the Garonne River make it the perfect cultural city to launch your Bordeaux region river cruise on the Garonne and Dordogne Rivers.

Pyrénées – Mont Perdu

The breathtaking mountain landscape of the Pyrénées spans the national borders of France and Spain, with the peak of Mount Perdu as its notable centerpiece rising to 11,000 feet. This region encompasses two of Europe’s largest and deepest canyons on the Spanish side and three major cirque walls on the more stark and steep northern side of France. This area is also a farming landscape that reflects an agricultural lifestyle that, although once widespread, now survives only in this part of the Pyrénées. This region provides keen reflection into historical European society through its landscape of villages, farms, fields, pastures and mountain roads.

Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley

The cultural landscape of Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley provides a small but important insight into the way residents have harvested the natural resources of the Pyrenees for thousands of years. The dramatic glacial landscape and craggy cliffs, with high open pastures and steep wooded valleys, covers an area of 9% of the total area of the region. It shows the past changes in climate, economics and social systems, as well as the persistence of pastoralism and a strong mountain culture dating back to the 13th century. The Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley features historical farm houses, notably summer settlements, terraced fields, stone trails and even evidence of iron mining.

Catalan Romanesque Churches of The Vall De Boí

The narrow and steep Vall de Boí is situated in the high Pyrénées, in the Alta Ribagorça region and is surrounded by impressive mountains. Each village in the valley contains a Romanesque church that is surrounded by a pattern of farming fields. There are extensive seasonal grazing lands on the higher slopes of the valley.
