Baidicheng

China

Baidicheng or Baidi City is an ancient temple complex on a hill on the northern shore of the Yangtze River in China. The name Baidicheng literally means White Emperor City. It has been said that the area was once surrounded with a white mist, giving it a mysterious and serene appearance, much as what an emperor should be like. The temple complex is now on an island as a result of raised water levels following the construction of the Three Gorges Dam. Many older structures were sadly submerged. The temple complex island is linked to the north bank of the Yangtze, by a bridge. The island continues to be a tourist attraction, with many cruise ships halting for tours at Fengjie.

Chongqing

China

Chongqing is one of the most economically important cities in West China and is the biggest inland city in the country with plans for even more massive growth. Chongqing is also the launching point for scenic boat trips down the Yangtze River through the Three Gorges Dam. While in Chongqing take time to visit Zhou Enlai’s old residence and museum or Hong Ya Dong with its many tourist shops. The popular Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street is a popular downtown spot at night with shopping, restaurants, and bars. This thriving metropolis has countless things to offer you before or after your Yangtze River Cruise.

Shibaozhai

China

Shibaozhai is a hill along the banks of the Yangtze River in Zhong County of Chongqing, China. This rocky hill is very steep and about 660 feet high. On the river side of the hill is a red pavilion that leans against the side that provides a walkway up to the temple at the top of the hill. Your tour of the Shibaozhai hill and temple will take a few hours and lots of steps to the top, but the views and the history are well worth the effort.

The Three Gorges

China

The Three Gorges are three adjacent gorges along the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, in the hinterland of the People’s Republic of China. With a subtropical monsoon climate, they are known for their scenery. The Three Gorges are the Qutang, Wu, and Xiling gorges and they span 193 miles, beginning at Baidi City of Chongqing in the west and ending at Nanjing Pass in Hubei Province in the east. Of course, your river cruise on the Yangtze will include a visit to the famous Three Gorges dam complex – the world’s largest power station.

Wuhan

China

Wuhan is the capital city of Hubei Province in central China. It is located on Jianghan Plain, a fertile land created by confluence of the Hanjiang and Yangtze Rivers. Wuhan is known as the ‘Three Towns of Wuhan’ with Hankou and Hanyang on the west bank of the Yangtze, and Wuchang on the east. In Wuhan you will find both history and natural wonders. Hubei Provincial Museum and Yellow Crane Tower are two places to appreciate ancient Chinese history and culture. In the museum, chimes excavated from tombs reveal the incredible achievements of ancient people in music, acoustics and metallurgy. Also popular with visitors is the Guiyuan Buddhist Temple, Heptachord Terrace and the Huangpi Mulan Culture area.

Yichang

China

Yichang is an ancient city and its history can be traced back for 4,000 years. The Yangtze River runs through the city center and the Gezhouba Water Conservancy Project and Three Gorges Dam Project are located there. Benefiting from these projects, it has become the largest hydroelectric resource center in China. Besides the magnificent scenery of the city and its surroundings, Yichang is famous for its local agricultural products like oranges, persimmons, Chinese gooseberries, and tea, that are sold in the street markets throughout the town.

Yueyang

China

Located at the northeast of Hunan Province, Yueyang borders Jiangxi Province in the east and Hubei Province in the north. Yueyang was of military importance during the ancient dynasties and is today ranked as one of China’s top tourist destinations. Yueyang’s real charm lies with her human cultural relics and stunning natural landscape. The well-known Yueyang Pavilion is one of the three famous pavilions in South China. China’s second largest freshwater lake Dongting Lake is a popular destination.
